Random Error

Erros indeterminados ou aleatórios surgem de várias variáveis incontroláveis em medições sucessivas.
Como esses erros não podem ser previstos nem estimados, eles nunca são eliminados. Às vezes, é difícil até mesmo identificar as fontes de erro individuais. Considere um exemplo de erros aleatórios do ruído elétrico em um instrumento. As flutuações podem ir em direções positivas e negativas e diferem em magnitude.
Devido a essas variações aleatórias, os erros indeterminados são dispersos. No entanto, para um grande conjunto de dados, as leis matemáticas da probabilidade ajudam a encontrar os resultados mais prováveis na média ou mediana.
Ao plotar os dados com erros aleatórios, os valores são distribuídos em ambas as direções em torno do valor central que ocorre com mais frequência. Random error in measurements comes from uncontrollable variables that affect data from one trial to the next. These variables can include changes in the environment, imperfections in an instrument, or the natural variation of the thing being measured. Because the direction and size of the error can change from one measurement to the next, random error is hard to predict, estimate, or describe directly.

Although random error is difficult to remove, its overall effect can be studied in a large data set. One way to do this is to count how often different measurement values appear. This approach helps scientists see patterns in the full set of observations and supports statistical analysis.

For example, repeated temperature measurements in London can be plotted by temperature value and frequency of occurrence. If the variation is truly random, the data form a normal distribution, also called a Gaussian curve. That curve lets students use probability to estimate the mean and the standard deviation, which is the spread around the mean. From there, it becomes possible to test for outliers and draw conclusions about the data set.
