Uncertainty: Overview

A incerteza reflete a possível faixa de valores em que o resultado de uma medição pode existir.
No entanto, a incerteza varia de erro, que é a diferença entre o resultado medido e o valor verdadeiro.
Para sua representação, a incerteza em um valor é colocada à direita da magnitude do resultado, expressa em algarismos significativos.

Na química analítica, frequentemente realizamos medições repetitivas para detectar e minimizar imprecisões causadas por erros determinados e indeterminados. A diferença coletiva entre essas medições – valores observados – e o valor estimado ou esperado é chamada de incerteza. A incerteza é convencionalmente escrita após o valor estimado ou esperado.

É importante expressar a incerteza com o número correto de algarismos significativos, que é o número de dígitos necessários para representar o resultado preciso. A magnitude das possíveis variações do algarismo significativo em qualquer direção é expressa como adição ou subtração ao algarismo significativo. A incerteza representada dessa forma é chamada de incerteza absoluta. A razão entre a incerteza absoluta e a magnitude do valor estimado ou esperado é conhecida como incerteza relativa.

Uncertainty is part of analytical chemistry measurement. When repeated measurements are taken, random errors can cause the results to differ in small ways. These repeated values are compared with the estimated or expected value to judge how much uncertainty is present.

Uncertainty is usually written after the estimated or expected value. It should also be reported with the correct number of significant figures, which are the digits needed to show a precise result. The possible variation from the significant figure in either direction is shown with addition or subtraction. This form is called absolute uncertainty.

Relative uncertainty compares the size of the absolute uncertainty with the estimated or expected value. It is written as a ratio. Together, absolute uncertainty and relative uncertainty help describe the range in which a measured result may lie.
