Apparent Weight

Considere um elevador em repouso, com uma caixa em uma balança. A força gravitacional na caixa é igual à força normal exercida pela escala na caixa, de modo que a magnitude da força resultante na caixa é zero. A balança lê a magnitude da força normal, que é o peso real da caixa.
Se o elevador se move para cima com uma aceleração constante, a magnitude líquida da força na caixa é igual à diferença entre a força normal e a força gravitacional sobre ela. A balança lê o peso aparente maior do que o peso real da caixa.

peso aparente

O peso verdadeiro é a medida da força gravitacional que atua em um objeto. No entanto, se o objeto estiver acelerado, seu peso medido será diferente do seu peso verdadeiro. Observações semelhantes podem ser feitas quando o objeto está submerso na água. O peso de um objeto na água é o seu peso aparente, que é igual à diferença entre o seu peso verdadeiro e as forças de empuxo.

Considere uma pessoa em pé em uma balança de banheiro dentro de um elevador. Se a balança estiver correta em repouso, a leitura dela será igual à magnitude da força que a pessoa exerce para baixo sobre ela. A "ausência de peso" experimentada por pessoas em uma órbita de satélite próxima à Terra é a mesma ausência de peso aparente experimentada em um elevador em queda livre. A força da gravidade faz com que o satélite "caia" fora de sua trajetória reta natural. Assim, embora a força da gravidade atue sobre os objetos dentro do satélite, os objetos experimentam uma ausência de peso aparente porque eles e o satélite estão acelerando juntos, como em uma queda livre.

Scale readings can change when an object is moving or submerged in water. The force we call true weight is the gravitational force acting on an object. When motion or fluid forces are present, the reading can differ from that true weight. In water, this changed reading is called apparent weight, and it equals true weight minus the buoyant force.

A bathroom scale in an elevator shows how this works. At rest, the scale reads the force the person pushes downward on it. The only forces on the person are weight and the upward normal force from the scale. Because the net force is zero, the normal force matches the person’s true weight.

If the elevator accelerates upward with constant acceleration, the apparent weight becomes greater than the true weight. The net force on the person is then greater than zero. If the elevator decelerates, the apparent weight becomes less than the true weight. In that case, the net force on the person is negative.

If the elevator is in free fall, the person feels weightless. This is called apparent weightlessness. The same effect happens for people in a satellite orbit close to Earth. Gravity still acts on the satellite and on the objects inside it. But both the satellite and the objects are falling together, so they experience apparent weightlessness just like a free-falling elevator.
