Considere uma moldura com um fio deslizante embebido em solução de sabão para formar uma bolha com as superfícies superior e inferior. A tensão superficial atua perpendicularmente ao fio deslizante e é necessária uma força externa para puxar o fio para fora. Essa força por unidade de comprimento fornece a tensão superficial.

Considere uma estrutura com um braço deslizante mergulhado em uma solução de sabão. A bolha de sabão puxa o braço deslizante para dentro devido à tensão superficial. Se a estrutura for mantida em posição vertical, de modo que o braço deslizante possa se mover para cima e para baixo, então um pequeno peso pode ser pendurado no braço deslizante para manter a estrutura em equilíbrio. Esse peso é igual à força necessária para puxar o braço para fora. A tensão superficial é expressa como força por unidade de comprimento. Sua unidade é N/m ou J/m2.

Surface tension and surface energy explain why liquids behave the way they do at their surface. A paint brush moves freely in water, but its bristles stick together after it is taken out. That change is caused by surface tension.

Inside a liquid, bulk molecules feel attractive forces from nearby molecules in all directions. At the surface, molecules feel a net downward pull from the molecules below them. Because of this imbalance, the liquid surface acts like a stretched membrane and tries to reduce its surface area.

This effect helps liquid drops take a spherical shape. A sphere has the smallest surface area for a given volume. Surface tension can also let some objects denser than water, such as a needle, float on water.

The same idea can be shown with a frame that has a sliding arm in soap solution. The soap bubble pulls the sliding arm inward because of surface tension. If the frame is vertical, the arm can move up and down, and a small weight can be hung on it to keep the frame in equilibrium. That weight matches the force needed to pull the arm outward again.

Surface tension is measured as force per unit length. Its unit is N/m or J/m2. Surface molecules also have higher potential energy than molecules in the liquid bulk. This stored energy is called surface energy, and it is the product of force and displacement.
