Speed of a Transverse Wave

Considere uma corda esticada flexível em uma posição de equilíbrio com uma densidade de massa linear μ e uma força de tensão T.
Quando uma força ascendente constante é aplicada na extremidade direita, uma onda transversal percorre a corda com velocidade constante.
O pequeno elemento de comprimento Δx oscila perpendicularmente ao movimento da onda devido à força restauradora da corda.
A força em cada extremidade é tangente à corda.
As forças de tensão nas direções x têm magnitude igual e direções opostas, então elas se cancelam.

A velocidade de uma onda depende das características do meio. Por exemplo, no caso de uma guitarra, as cordas vibram para produzir o som. A velocidade das ondas nas cordas e o comprimento de onda determinam a frequência do som produzido. As cordas de uma guitarra têm espessuras diferentes, mas podem ser feitas do mesmo material. Elas têm diferentes densidades lineares, com a densidade linear sendo definida como a massa por unidade de comprimento.

Uma das principais propriedades de qualquer onda é a velocidade da onda. As ondas de luz têm uma velocidade de propagação muito maior do que as ondas sonoras no ar. Por esse motivo, um clarão é visto antes do som de um trovão ser ouvido. É importante entender a velocidade de ondas transversais em uma corda porque essa velocidade é essencial para analisar instrumentos musicais de cordas. The speed of transverse waves on a string depends on the string’s tension and its mass per unit length. A string with more tension has stronger restoring forces. Those forces help pull the string back to straight after it is disturbed, so the wave moves faster.

Mass per unit length is the mass of a string divided by its length. It is also called linear density. Strings on a guitar can have different thicknesses even when they are made of similar material, so they can have different linear densities.

Wave speed matters for stringed musical instruments because it helps determine the frequency of the sound produced along with wavelength. It also connects to other mechanical waves, since many of them follow the same main mathematical expression as waves on a string. Wave speed is a key property of any wave.

The idea of wave speed also explains real-world events. Light waves travel much faster than sound waves in air. That is why a flash from lightning is seen before the clap of thunder is heard.

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
