O manuseio de amostras compreende dois aspectos críticos para garantir resultados precisos - armazenamento e transporte. 
O transporte refere-se ao processo de mover amostras para o laboratório sem qualquer alteração em suas características físicas ou químicas. Durante o transporte, dependendo da natureza da amostra, técnicas de preservação como congelamento e preservação química podem ser necessárias para evitar alterações.
Por exemplo, o congelamento evita a degradação térmica de amostras sensíveis à temperatura. A adição de conservantes químicos, como agentes antibacterianos, às amostras impede o crescimento microbiano.
No laboratório, o armazenamento adequado das amostras é essencial para evitar a degradação da amostra. Por exemplo, amostras termicamente lábeis são embaladas em recipientes lacrados, armazenadas em geladeiras ou congeladas.
As amostras líquidas sensíveis à luz devem ser armazenadas em ambientes escuros ou garrafas âmbar.
