A parte mais importante da operação de um JFET é controlar a corrente de dreno modulando a tensão porta-fonte. A corrente de dreno aumenta linearmente à medida que a tensão fonte-dreno varia, mantendo a tensão da porta zero. JFET output characteristics show how drain current changes with drain-source voltage and gate-source voltage. In a junction field effect transistor, the gate-source voltage controls the drain current. When the drain and gate voltages are set to zero, the device is in equilibrium and no net current flows.

With the gate voltage held at zero, the drain current rises linearly as the source-drain voltage increases. This linear part is called the Ohmic region. In this region, the JFET acts like a voltage-controlled resistor, so it can work as an electronic switch by changing how much current passes through the channel.

As the drain-source voltage keeps increasing, the JFET enters the saturation region, also called pinch-off. This happens when the depletion layers from the reverse-biased gate-drain p-n diode grow until they meet. The channel is then pinched off, and the drain current reaches a nearly constant saturation level even if the drain-source voltage increases further.

This stable current makes JFETs useful in amplifiers, where a steady output current is needed for changing input signals. If the drain-source voltage goes beyond a set limit, the device can enter the breakdown region. In that region, the drain current rises quickly, which can damage the JFET and lead to device failure. Knowing these regions helps with safe and reliable use in switching and amplification circuits.
