Para determinar a distribuição da tensão de cisalhamento, considere uma seção cilíndrica dentro de um eixo circular de comprimento L e raio R, fixado em uma extremidade. O raio da seção cilíndrica é r.
Agora, considere o pequeno elemento quadrado formado por dois círculos adjacentes e linhas retas na superfície da seção cilíndrica antes de aplicar qualquer carga.
À medida que a carga de torção é aplicada ao eixo, o elemento quadrado se deforma em um losango. Como os dois lados do losango são fixos, a deformação de cisalhamento é igual ao ângulo entre as linhas AB e A'B.

Shear strain in a circular shaft describes how the shaft’s surface changes shape under torsion. A circular shaft keeps each cross-section flat and undistorted as it twists. Each section behaves like a rigid slab that rotates in place.

To study the strain inside the shaft, consider a cylindrical section with length L and radius R. One end of this section is fixed. The radius at a point inside the section is labeled r.

Before the load is applied, a small square element lies on the surface of the cylinder. It is formed by two neighboring circles and straight lines. When torsion is applied, that square element changes into a rhombus.

Because two sides of the rhombus stay anchored, the shearing strain can be measured by the angle between line AB on the cylinder wall and the inclined line A'B along one side of the rhombus. Using small-angle approximation and basic geometry, the shear strain at a point in the shaft is proportional to the angle of twist and to the distance r from the shaft’s axis. The strain is greatest at the outer surface.
