Non-destructive Tests for Concrete Strength

Testes não destrutivos, como o teste de martelo de ressalto e o teste de resistência à penetração, podem ser usados para determinar a resistência do concreto em uma estrutura existente.
O martelo de rebote, também conhecido como martelo Schmidt, abriga uma massa com mola.
O martelo é mantido perpendicularmente a uma superfície de concreto uniforme, pressionando o êmbolo contra ele, fazendo com que a mola se estenda, retraindo a massa.
Quando liberada, a massa se recupera do êmbolo. A extensão desse rebote é então medida em uma escala fixada ao martelo e é chamada de número de rebote.
Quanto maior o valor do número de rebote, mais dura é a superfície do concreto, indicando alta resistência do concreto.
O teste de resistência à penetração, também conhecido como teste da Sonda de Windsor, usa um dispositivo semelhante a uma arma equipado com um gabarito triangular com três orifícios.

Concrete strength can be checked without fully breaking the material. Two common methods are the rebound hammer test, also called the Schmidt hammer test, and the penetration resistance test, also called the Windsor Probe test. Both are used to estimate the strength of existing concrete.

The rebound hammer test measures the hardness of the concrete surface and gives an indirect clue about strength. A spring-driven mass moves inside a tubular housing and strikes a plunger against the concrete. The mass then rebounds, and the travel distance gives a rebound number. That number can be affected by aggregates and voids under the surface, as well as by the angle of the hammer. For that reason, multiple readings are needed for better accuracy.

The penetration resistance test looks at how far probes can enter the concrete. A gunlike device fires probes through three holes in a template attached to the surface. The test makes small holes, so it slightly damages the concrete, but it is still considered a low-damage method. The deeper the probe goes, the lower the concrete strength is likely to be. The average penetration of the three probes is used to measure strength, and this method is considered more accurate than the rebound hammer because it checks material below the surface.
