An ecological niche refers to the role and position of a microbial species within its environment.This includes how it uses resources, reproduces, and interacts with other organisms.The fundamental niche of a microorganism includes all the abiotic conditions, such as light and nutrient availability, in which it can survive and grow in the absence of competition.For example, in a lake, photosynthetic bacteria could inhabit any area of the upper layers where light, nutrients, and suitable temperatures are present.However, in natural environments, different photosynthetic microorganisms compete for the same resources, especially light.As a result, some species dominate the well-lit surface layers, while others are displaced to deeper regions where light availability is lower.This narrower set of conditions makes up the realized niche of a microorganism. It refers to the most favorable conditions under which a microbe grows most successfully.

Microbial niches describe how microorganisms survive, grow, and interact in an ecosystem. A niche includes how a microbe gets resources, reproduces, and relates to other species in its environment. This idea helps explain microbial community dynamics, biogeography, and ecosystem function.

A microorganism’s fundamental niche is the full range of conditions where it could survive, grow, and reproduce. These conditions include both biotic factors, such as living interactions, and abiotic factors, such as light, nutrients, and temperature. For example, photosynthetic bacteria in a freshwater lake may be able to occupy the whole photic zone if those conditions are suitable.

In nature, a microbe’s actual range is often smaller. Competition, predation, and physical or chemical barriers can limit where it is found. This smaller range is called the realized niche. In microbial ecology, the realized niche is also called the prime niche, because it reflects the conditions where the organism performs best in the ecosystem.

Niche differentiation helps multiple microbial species share the same environment. Competition for limited light, nutrients, or space can push microbes into specialized microenvironments. Small differences in pigment composition or metabolic pathways can let photosynthetic bacteria use different wavelengths of light. This resource partitioning supports coexistence and shows why niche specialization matters in microbial communities.
