When engineers design a symmetric satellite dish, they don't need to calculate every point individually.
If we place the y-axis along the dish’s axis of symmetry, engineers can model this symmetric cross-section using an even function.
A function is even if a negative input gives the same output as the corresponding positive input. Graphically, an even function has symmetry about the y-axis, which acts like a vertical mirror. For example, in the function f(x) = x2, the input x equals 3 gives an output of 9, and the input x = -3 also gives the same output.
Similarly, the cross-section of a satellite dish can be modeled by f(x) = ax2. Positive and negative x-values of the same magnitude produce the same y-value, creating a parabola symmetric about the y-axis.
Engineers calculate just one half of the parabola and replicate it across the central axis by rotating it 360 degrees to form the full dish.
So, whenever a real-world system or curve exhibits mirror symmetry about a central axis, it can be analyzed as an even function.
Symmetry allows engineers to simplify the mathematical analysis of many structures. A satellite dish is a useful example because its cross-section is…
