Equity Financing

Equity financing is a method of raising capital by selling an ownership interest in a company to investors, making it a core alternative to borrowing. In this arrangement, investors provide funds in exchange for shares or other equity instruments and may receive voting rights, dividends, or future returns as the business grows; unlike debt, the capital generally does not require fixed repayment, but it can dilute existing ownership and control. Companies use equity financing through private placements, venture capital, angel investment, or public offerings to fund expansion, research, acquisitions, and operations. Its costs and risks depend on valuation, investor expectations, and the company’s performance.
