Healthy Blood Donors

Healthy blood donors are individuals who meet clinical eligibility criteria and can provide blood for transfusion or biomedical research without evidence of conditions that could endanger recipients. Their suitability is assessed through health-history reviews, physical screening, and laboratory testing for markers of infectious disease, helping identify donors whose blood is safe for collection. In immunology and infection research, samples from healthy donors provide baseline blood cells, plasma, and immune factors for comparison with specimens from infected or diseased individuals. These reference samples support studies of immune activation, pathogen detection, transfusion safety, and variation in human immune responses.

COVID-19 Seroprevalence Test for IgG Antibody Levels Among Healthy Donors Across Different Pandemic Phases in Jeddah

2025

This study assessed COVID-19 seroprevalence in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, among healthy blood donors across pre-lockdown, during-lockdown, and post-lockdown periods. Of 3,825 samples, 4.5% tested positive for IgG antibodies. Seroprevalence increased significantly post-lockdown, highlighting the role of asymptomatic transmission and the effectiveness of initial restrictions.

Antigens Protected Functional Red Blood Cells By The Membrane Grafting Of Compact Hyperbranched Polyglycerols

The cell membrane modification of red blood cells (RBCs) with hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) is presented. Modified RBCs were characterized by aqueous two phase partitioning, osmotic fragility and complement mediated lysis. The camouflage of surface proteins and antigens was evaluated using the flow cytometry and Micro Typing System (MTS) blood phenotyping cards.

Endothelial corneal transplantation is a surgical technique for treatment of posterior corneal diseases. Mechanical microkeratome dissection to prepare tissue results in thinner, more symmetric grafts with less endothelial cell loss and improved outcomes. Dissections can be performed at the eye bank prior to corneal transplantation surgery.
