The Sulfur Cycle

Серный цикл

Сера, важный элемент в химическом составе белков, повторно используется в атмосфере, а также в водной и земной среде. Находящаяся в атмосфере в виде диоксида серы (SO 2 ), сера выделяется разлагающимися организмами, выветрившимися породами, геотермальными источниками, вулканами и сжиганием ископаемого топлива. Она откладывается в экосистеме, циркулирует в биотическом сообществе и либо выбрасывается обратно в атмосферу в виде газа, либо откладывается в морских отложениях для длительного хранения и последующего выброса обратно в почву и атмосферу. 

<h4> Биогеохимический цикл серы </h4>

 Сера необходима для биологических систем и является компонентом некоторых аминокислот, например цистеина, который играет важную роль в структуре белков. Сера попадает в наземные (то есть наземные) экосистемы в результате осаждения слабой серной кислоты, прямых выпадений из атмосферы, выветривания серосодержащих пород и геотермальных источников. 

 Из почвы она поглощается микроорганизмами и растениями и превращается в органические формы, которые могут быть использованы потребителями в экосистеме. Когда организмы умирают, разлагатели расщепляют органические соединения серы на газы, такие как сероводород, который окисляется в атмосфере с образованием диоксида серы. Кроме того, некоторые хемоавтотрофы используют серу в качестве источника биологической энергии и рециркулируют молекулы серы непосредственно через экосистемы. 

 Сера попадает в морские экосистемы через сток с суши, прямые осадки из атмосферы и подводные геотермальные источники. Часть этой серы проходит через пищевую цепочку и выбрасывается в атмосферувместе с морской водой. Остальная часть оседает в виде осадка на дне океана, где хранится в течение продолжительных периодов времени. С течением времени геологичекий подъём может вернуть отложения обратно на землю, где сера выделяется в результате эрозии. 

<h4> Влияние человека на цикл серы </h4>

 При сжигании ископаемого топлива, особенно угля, в атмосферу попадает неестественное количество сероводорода, в результате чего повышается концентрация диоксида серы, что проявляется в виде кислотных дождей. Кислотные дожди наносят вред окружающей среде, понижая pH озер и рек, нанося вред как водной, так и наземной фауне.

sulfur in ecosystems and acid rain

Sulfur moves through ecosystems as part of the chemical cycle that supports life. It is an important element in proteins and in amino acids such as cysteine, which helps give proteins their structure.

On land, sulfur reaches ecosystems in several ways. Weak sulfuric acid can fall with precipitation, sulfur can drop directly from the atmosphere, rocks can weather and release sulfur, and geothermal vents can add it as well. Plants and microorganisms take sulfur up from the soil and change it into organic forms that consumers can use.

When organisms die, decomposers break down organic sulfur compounds. This process can release gases such as hydrogen sulfide, which is then oxidized in the atmosphere to form sulfur dioxide. Some chemoautotrophs also use sulfur as an energy source, so sulfur can move directly through ecosystems in that way.

Marine ecosystems also receive sulfur from runoff from land, fallout from the atmosphere, and underwater geothermal vents. Some of it moves through the food chain and returns to the atmosphere as sea spray. The rest becomes sediment on the ocean floor, where it can stay for long periods before uplift and erosion return it to land.

Human activity can change this cycle. Burning fossil fuels, especially coal, adds extra hydrogen sulfide gas to the atmosphere and raises sulfur dioxide levels. This can lead to acid rain, which lowers the pH of lakes and rivers and harms both aquatic and terrestrial animals.
