Propagation of Waves

Когда волна распространяется из одной среды в другую, часть её может отразиться в первой среде, а часть может проникнуть во вторую среду. В таком случае интерфейс двух сред можно рассматривать как границу, которая не является ни неподвижной, ни свободной.

Рассмотрим ситуацию, когда волна распространяется от струны с низкой линейной плотностью массы к струне с высокой линейной плотностью массы. В таком случае отражённая волна имеет фазу, противоположную фазе падающей волны, в то время как проникающая волна находится в фазе с падающей волной. И отражённая, и проникающая волна имеют амплитуды меньшие, чем амплитуда падающей волны. Если натяжение в обеих струнах одинаково, скорость волны ниже в струне с более высокой линейной плотностью массы.

В отличие от этого рассмотрим распространение волн от струны с высокой линейной плотностью массы к струне с низкой линейной плотностью массы. В таком случае отражённая волна находится в фазе с падающей волной, как и проникающая волна. И отражённая, и проникающая волна имеют амплитуды меньшие, чем амплитуда падающей волны.

wave reflection and transmission

Wave reflection and transmission happen when a wave moves from one medium to another. At the boundary, part of the wave can bounce back into the first medium, and part can pass into the second medium. The interface between the two media then acts like a boundary that is neither fixed nor free.

The wave behavior depends on the change in linear mass density of the strings. When a wave travels from a string with low linear mass density to a string with high linear mass density, the reflected wave is out of phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave stays in phase with the incident wave. In this case, both reflected and transmitted waves have smaller amplitudes than the incoming wave.

If the tension in both strings is the same, the wave speed is lower in the string with higher linear mass density. The opposite change gives a different phase result. When a wave moves from a string with high linear mass density to a string with low linear mass density, the reflected wave is in phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave is also in phase, and both waves again have amplitudes smaller than the incident wave.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions. A simplified surface water wave is a good example. The water moves up and down, while the wave disturbance travels horizontally through the medium.
