Graphing the Wave Function

Построение графика волновой функции

Рассмотрим уравнение волны для синусоидальной волны, движущейся в положительном направлении x. Уравнение волны является функцией как положения, так и времени. Из уравнения волны можно построить два разных графика.

Если выбрать определённое время, скажем t = 0, это означает, что снимается «снимок» волны, и полученный график представляет собой форму волны в момент t=0. Этот график называется графиком смещения относительно положения и представляет смещение частицы от её равновесного положения в зависимости от положения. Длина волны может быть выведена из этого графика. Самая высокая точка волны относительно равновесного положения называется гребнем, а самая низкая точка - впадиной. Расстояние между двумя последовательными впадинами или гребнями с одинаковой высотой и одинаковым наклоном является длиной волны. В случае поперечной волны на струне график представляет собой фактическую форму струны в данный момент времени.

С другой стороны, при выборе определённой координаты, скажем x = 0, построение уравнения волны приводит к графику смещения относительно времени. Этот график даёт смещение частицы в зависимости от времени. Период волны может быть получен из графика. Время, затраченное частицей на одну полную осцилляцию, является периодом волны.

В уравнении волны аргумент функции косинуса называется фазой волны. Он является угловой величиной и измеряется в радианах. Значение фазы для любых значений x и t определяет, какая часть синусоидального цикла происходит в определённой точке и времени. Для гребня, когда функция косинуса имеет значение 1, фаза может быть 0, 2π, 4π, 6π, и так далее. Соответственно, для впадины, когда функция косинуса имеет значение -1, фаза может быть π, 3π, 5π, 7π и так далее. Фазовая скорость - это скорость, с которой волна движется при постоянной фазе. Выражение для фазовой скорости задается следующим образом:

wave snapshots, period, and phase

Wave snapshots, period, and phase help describe a sinusoidal wave moving in the positive x-direction. The wave equation depends on both position and time. That is why it can be shown in more than one way.

If time is fixed, such as at t = 0, the graph becomes a snapshot of the wave. This is a displacement versus position graph. It shows the displacement of the particle from equilibrium as a function of position. From this graph, the wavelength can be found. For a transverse wave on a string, the graph shows the actual shape of the string at that instant.

The crest is the highest point of the wave above equilibrium. The trough is the lowest point below equilibrium. The wavelength is the distance between two consecutive crests or two consecutive troughs with the same height and the same slope.

If position is fixed, such as at x = 0, the graph becomes a displacement versus time graph. This graph shows how the particle’s displacement changes with time. The period can be read from it. The period is the time needed for one complete oscillation.

The phase of the wave is the argument of the cosine function. It is an angular quantity measured in radians. The phase tells which part of the sinusoidal cycle is present at a given position and time. A crest occurs when the cosine value is 1, so the phase can be 0, 2π, 4π, 6π, and so on. A trough occurs when the cosine value is −1, so the phase can be π, 3π, 5π, 7π, and so on.

Phase velocity is the speed of the wave when the phase stays constant. It describes how fast the wave pattern moves through space. The expression for phase velocity is given from this condition.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Reading Wave Motion by Its Features

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions.
