Configurations of BJT

Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) configurations are defined by which terminal is shared by the input and output circuits. The shared terminal can be the base, emitter, or collector. Each setup has different electrical behavior and fits different circuit needs.

In the common base configuration, the base is the common terminal. This setup has high voltage gain, so it can work well in single-stage amplifier circuits such as microphone pre-amplifiers. It also reduces the input current signal because the output collector current is usually lower than the input emitter current.

The common emitter configuration is the most widely used transistor amplifier setup. It offers better input impedance, current gain, and power gain than the common base arrangement. It also acts as an inverting amplifier, so the output signal is 180 degrees out of phase with the input signal.

The common collector configuration is also called an emitter follower or voltage follower circuit. It has very high input impedance and low output impedance. Its voltage gain is slightly less than one, but it provides strong current amplification without inverting the input signal. This makes it useful for impedance matching and as a voltage buffer in many applications.
