Microbial competition shapes how bacteria and other microbes share space and resources. In shared environments, they compete for nutrients, space, or light. The strength of this competition depends on the environment, including nutrient levels, space limits, and how many microbial species are present. These interactions help determine the structure, function, and resilience of microbial communities.

Microbial competition is usually grouped into exploitative competition and interference competition. In exploitative competition, microbes reduce access to shared resources by using them more efficiently. A common example is siderophore-producing bacteria, which bind iron very tightly and leave less iron available for other microbes. This slows the growth of competitors.

Interference competition is more direct. It can be contact-independent or contact-dependent. In contact-independent interference, microbes release inhibitory molecules into the environment, such as antibiotics or bacteriocins. In contact-dependent interference, cells must physically interact. Many Gram-negative bacteria use the Type VI secretion system to inject toxic effectors into nearby cells.

When two microbes live in the same niche and one keeps outcompeting the other, the weaker strain may disappear. This fits Gause’s Competitive Exclusion Principle. Microbial communities often avoid this outcome through niche partitioning, which means species use different ecological roles or conditions. They may rely on different carbon sources, oxygen levels, or temperatures, which lowers direct conflict and allows coexistence.

Aquatic ecosystems provide a clear example of niche partitioning. Cyanobacteria live mainly in the sunlit upper water layers because they use light for photosynthesis. Heterotrophic proteobacteria are more common in deeper, darker zones, where they use organic matter for energy instead of sunlight. This vertical separation reduces competition and supports stable microbial diversity in water.
