Leaflet Stress

Leaflet stress is the mechanical stress that develops within thin, flexible biological or engineered valve leaflets when they bear fluid pressure and maintain one-way flow. In bioengineering analyses, pressure differences and fluid motion load the leaflet surface, while its thickness, geometry, material properties, and collagen-fiber organization determine how forces are distributed through tension, bending, and stretching; computational models and experimental measurements can estimate these stresses. Assessing leaflet stress helps researchers evaluate native and prosthetic heart-valve function, identify regions vulnerable to fatigue or tissue damage, and optimize designs for durability, hemodynamic performance, and biocompatibility.

2013

There has been renewed interest in developing polymer valves. Here, the objectives are to demonstrate the feasibility of modifying a commercial pulse duplicator to accommodate tri-leaflet geometries and to define a protocol to present polymer valve hydrodynamic data in comparison to native and prosthetic valve data collected under near-identical conditions.

Modeling Social Stress

2023

Stress negatively affects our quality of life. In particular, some individuals experience social stress when placed in a social environment that they are unfamiliar with or have difficulty adjusting to. Since it is hard to examine mechanisms of social stress in humans, modeling this condition in animals may help scientist in developing new therapies for treating this commonly encountered problem. This science education video begins by discussing the known anatomy and physiology behind stress...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Aluminum is one of the most abundant materials in our lives, as it is omnipresent in everything from soda cans to airplane components. Its widespread use is relatively recent (1900AD), primarily because aluminum does not occur in its free state, but rather in combination with oxygen and other elements, often in the form of Al2O3. Aluminum was originally obtained from bauxite mineral deposits...
