Dissecting Wax Preparation

Dissecting wax preparation is a laboratory method that creates a firm, pin-friendly surface for positioning and examining biological specimens during dissection. Molten wax, commonly paraffin, is poured into a shallow dish or tray and allowed to cool, producing a stable layer that holds dissecting pins while supporting the specimen in liquid or dry conditions. This preparation helps students and researchers expose structures systematically, maintain specimen orientation, and make precise incisions with dissecting instruments. It is widely used in teaching anatomy and morphology, as well as in practical investigations of invertebrates, plant parts, and other biological materials.
