Benzaldehyde

Benzaldehyde is an aromatic aldehyde consisting of a benzene ring attached to a formyl group, making it an important building block in organic chemistry. Its polar carbonyl group undergoes nucleophilic addition and can be oxidized to benzoic acid or reduced to benzyl alcohol, illustrating characteristic aldehyde reactivity. Benzaldehyde is used in laboratory reactions and industrial synthesis of dyes, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and flavor compounds. Its distinctive almond-like odor also makes it a useful example for relating molecular structure to physical properties and for studying oxidation-reduction chemistry.

2023

Source: Vy M. Dong and Diane Le, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate a simple technique to titrate and obtain an accurate concentration of the organolithium reagent, n-butyllithium (n-BuLi). Organolithium reagents are extremely air- and moisture-sensitive and proper care must be taken to maintain the quality of the reagent so that it may be used successfully in a reaction. The n-BuLi titration experiments should be performed regularly...

Source: Lara Al Hariri and Ahmed Basabrain at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA, USA DNPH Test for Aromatic Aldehydes and KetonesExpand In this lab, you'll use the DNPH test, the Tollens' test, and the iodoform test to identify two unknown aldehydes or ketones. You'll use butanone and benzaldehyde as known compounds to confirm that the tests are working as expected. You'll start the lab with the DNPH test, which relies on the reaction between 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, or DNPH,...

Please adjust quantities as needed. Before you start, put on a lab coat, splash-proof safety glasses, and nitrile gloves. Note: DNPH is a shock explosive, so handle it gently with low friction tools. Phosphoric acid is also toxic and corrosive. Prepare 100 mL of a 0.1 M...
