Cis Trans Conformation

Cis-trans conformation describes the spatial arrangement of substituents relative to one another in molecules, a structural feature that can strongly influence chemical behavior. In alkenes, restricted rotation around a carbon-carbon double bond fixes substituents on the same side (cis) or opposite sides (trans), while ring structures similarly constrain their relative orientations; these arrangements are forms of geometric isomerism. Cis-trans relationships affect molecular shape, polarity, stability, boiling point, and reactivity, making them important in organic synthesis, stereochemical analysis, spectroscopy, and the study of biologically active molecules such as fatty acids and pharmaceuticals.

Disubstituted Cyclohexanes: cis-trans Isomerism

2023

Depending upon the different spatial orientation of the substituents, the disubstituted cycloalkanes exhibit two types of stereoisomers. The cis isomers have the substituents on the same side of the ring, whereas the trans isomers have the substituents on the opposite sides. These stereoisomers exhibit different physical properties and cannot be interconverted without breaking the carbon-carbon bonds. In cyclohexane, the substituents can occupy different positions generating distinct isomers.

Spatial Separation of Molecular Conformers and Clusters

2014

We present a technique that allows the spatial separation of different conformers or clusters present in a molecular beam. An electrostatic deflector is used to separate species by their mass-to-dipole moment ratio, leading to the production of gas-phase ensembles of a single conformer or cluster stoichiometry.

Cis-regulatory Sequences

2020

Cis-regulatory sequences are short fragments of non-coding DNA that are present on the same chromosomes as the genes that they regulate. These fragments serve as binding sites for transcriptional regulators, proteins that are responsible for controlling gene transcription and differential gene expression across cell types in eukaryotes. Cis-regulatory sequences can be close to the gene of interest or thousands of bases away in the DNA sequence; however, those sequences that are further away are...

Conformity

2020

Conformity is the change in a person’s behavior to go along with the group, even if that person does not agree with the group. Asch’s Original Study Solomon Asch conducted several experiments in the 1950s to determine how people are affected by the thoughts and behaviors of other people. In one study, a group of participants was shown a series of printed line segments of different lengths: a, b, and c. Participants were then shown a fourth line segment: x. They were asked to identify which...

Cell Aggregation Assays to Evaluate the Binding of the Drosophila Notch with Trans-Ligands and its Inhibition by Cis-Ligands

2018

Complexity of in vivo systems makes it difficult to distinguish between the activation and inhibition of Notch receptor by trans- and cis-ligands, respectively. Here, we present a protocol based on in vitro cell-aggregation assays for qualitative and semi-quantitative evaluation of the binding of Drosophila Notch to trans-ligands vs cis-ligands.
