Terahertz Imaging Applications

Terahertz imaging applications use electromagnetic radiation between the microwave and infrared regions to produce images that reveal material composition, structure, and defects without ionizing samples. In chemistry, terahertz pulses interact with molecular rotations, intermolecular vibrations, and dielectric properties, while changes in absorption, reflection, or transmission generate spatially resolved contrast. These measurements support chemical identification, polymorph and crystal-structure analysis, pharmaceutical quality control, and the detection of concealed layers or contaminants. By combining spectroscopic information with imaging, terahertz methods can analyze heterogeneous materials non-destructively and complement optical, infrared, and X-ray techniques in research and industrial settings.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.
