Alcohol Ablation

Alcohol ablation is a minimally invasive treatment that uses concentrated ethanol to intentionally destroy targeted tissue, reducing abnormal growth, obstruction, or electrical activity in selected clinical conditions. Delivered through a needle or catheter, ethanol disrupts cell membranes and proteins, produces local dehydration and coagulative necrosis, and may trigger vascular thrombosis followed by scar formation; the resulting lesion is influenced by dose, delivery route, and tissue anatomy. Clinicians use alcohol ablation for conditions such as hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, certain tumors, cysts, and pain-producing nerve pathways. Careful imaging and monitoring help maximize therapeutic benefit while limiting injury to surrounding structures.

You'll test known alcohols alongside the unknown alcohol as examples of positive and negative results for each test. The four known alcohols are 1-butanol, a primary alcohol, 2-butanol, a secondary alcohol, 2-methyl-2-propanol, a tertiary...

Alcohols Alcohols are organic compounds that are amongst the most recognizable and familiar, as they have wide-ranging applications and uses in everyday life. Alcohols are organic molecules containing a hydroxyl functional group connected to an alkyl or aryl group (ROH). If the hydroxyl carbon only has a single R group, it is known as primary alcohol. If it has two R groups, it is a secondary alcohol, and if it has three R groups, it is a tertiary alcohol. Like many other organic compounds,...

Please adjust quantities as needed. Before you begin, put on a lab coat, safety glasses, and nitrile gloves, and set up a waste container for aqueous chromium, iron, and zinc waste. Note: Work in a fume hood because the reagents are acidic, toxic, and corrosive. The reagents undergo...

Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) with an ablation catheter is a curative treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). Robotic catheter systems aim to improve catheter steerability. Here, a procedure with a new robotic catheter system is presented. The goal of the procedure is electrical block between pulmonary vein and left atrium.

Source: Muto, A., et al. Ablation of a Neuronal Population Using a Two-photon Laser and Its Assessment Using Calcium Imaging and Behavioral Recording in Zebrafish Larvae. J. Vis. Exp. (2018) In this video, a two-photon laser ablation procedure is demonstrated, enabling the selective destruction of fluorescent neurons in agarose-immobilized zebrafish larvae. High-resolution imaging before and after the procedure confirms efficient neuronal damage, as observed by the absence of fluorescence.
