Infective Endocarditis

Infective endocarditis is an infection of the heart’s inner lining, usually involving the cardiac valves, that can cause tissue destruction and life-threatening complications. It typically develops when bacteria or fungi enter the bloodstream, adhere to abnormal or damaged endocardial surfaces, and form platelet- and fibrin-rich vegetations that can impair valve function or embolize. Clinical evaluation combines patient history, physical examination, blood cultures, and echocardiography to identify the causative microorganism and cardiac damage. Treatment generally requires prolonged targeted antimicrobial therapy, with surgery considered for severe valve dysfunction, persistent infection, abscess formation, or recurrent embolization.

Introduction:Endocarditis is the infection of the endocardium, the inner lining of the heart and its valves. When the heart muscle is involved, the condition is termed myocarditis, while an infection of the outer lining is called pericarditis. Infective endocarditis (IE) primarily affects the endocardium, where pathogens adhere to the valves or lining, forming vegetation that can lead to severe complications. Infective endocarditis occurs when microorganisms, usually bacteria from other body...
