Ffpe Sections

FFPE sections are thin slices of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue that preserve cellular architecture for microscopic and molecular analysis. Formalin crosslinks cellular proteins to stabilize tissue, while dehydration, paraffin infiltration, and microtome sectioning produce durable specimens that can be deparaffinized and stained for examination. In developmental biology, FFPE sections help researchers compare tissue organization across developmental stages and localize morphological features, proteins, or nucleic acid signals within preserved specimens. They support histology, immunohistochemistry, and selected molecular assays, although fixation and processing can mask epitopes or degrade some analytes, making standardized preparation important for reliable interpretation.

In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...
