Motor Contribution

Motor contribution is the portion of force, torque, power, or motion supplied by a motor within an engineered system, making it useful for understanding how the motor supports overall performance. Engineers estimate it by relating motor output to system demand while considering load conditions, torque-speed behavior, efficiency, and control inputs. This analysis helps distinguish the motor’s role from contributions made by batteries, engines, mechanical transmissions, or external forces. Motor contribution is therefore important for actuator sizing, energy management, performance modeling, fault diagnosis, and control-system design in robotics, vehicles, manufacturing equipment, and other electromechanical applications.

Contribution Margin

2026

Understanding contribution margin helps businesses evaluate how individual products contribute to covering costs and generating profit. It is calculated as the difference between selling price per unit and teh variable cost per unit. The contribution margin is the portion of sales revenue remaining after variable costs are deducted. This amount is used to cover fixed costs and generate profit. Unlike gross margin, contribution margin excludes fixed production costs, making it useful for...

Contribution Margin Ratio

2026

The contribution margin ratio measures the portion of each sales dollar available to cover fixed costs and generate profit after variable costs have been deducted. It provides a simple way to evaluate profitability and operational efficiency. The ratio is calculated as:Contribution Margin Ratio = Contribution Margin ÷ Total SalesSince contribution margin equals total sales minus total variable costs, the ratio shows how much of every sales dollar remains after paying variable expenses. For...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The DC machine operates with DC currents and voltages as opposed to an AC machine, which requires AC currents and voltages. DC machines were the first to be invented and utilize two magnetic fields that are controlled by DC currents. The same machine can be easily reconfigured to be a motor or generator if appropriate field excitation is available, since the DC machine has two fields termed field...
