Rice Insect Resistance

Rice insect resistance is the ability of rice plants to withstand, deter, or recover from damage caused by insect pests, helping protect yields and reduce reliance on chemical control. It arises through traits such as tough or hairy plant surfaces, pest-deterring chemical compounds, and genetic defenses that limit insect feeding, development, or reproduction; researchers assess these responses through field and laboratory screening. In environmental research, rice insect resistance supports integrated pest management by lowering pesticide use, protecting beneficial organisms, and reducing agricultural impacts on soil and water. Breeding resistant varieties can therefore strengthen crop resilience and sustainability.

Beech bark disease is initiated by feeding activities of the beech scale insect that create fungal entry points in the bark. Trees that are resistant to the scale insect are also disease resistant. Here we present the protocol we have developed to screen individual beech trees for beech scale resistance.

Osmoregulation in Insects

2019

Malpighian tubules are specialized structures found in the digestive systems of many arthropods, including most insects, that handle excretion and osmoregulation. The tubules are typically arranged in pairs and have a convoluted structure that increases their surface area. Malpighian tubules extend from the digestive tract, typically the area between the midgut and hindgut, into the hemolymph—a mixture of blood and interstitial fluid found in insects and other arthropods, as well as most...

Establishment of Rice Plant Leaf Infection through Fungal Inoculation via Wounding

2025

This video demonstrates the establishment of rice plant leaf infection through wounding inoculation with Magnaporthe grisea mycelium. The fungal spore-derived germ tube penetrates the epidermal layer, resulting in tissue infection and lesions on the leaves. This method aids pathotype screening and improves plant resistance understanding for molecular breeding.
