Conjunctival Bacterial Isolation

Conjunctival bacterial isolation is a clinical microbiology technique used to recover and identify bacteria from the conjunctival surface, helping distinguish ocular infection from normal microbial colonization. A sterile swab collects material from the conjunctival sac, which is transferred to appropriate culture media under conditions that support bacterial growth; resulting colonies are then characterized by their appearance and laboratory identification tests. The method can reveal potential pathogens and guide antimicrobial selection when interpreted alongside symptoms and examination findings. It also supports surveillance of ocular infections, investigation of treatment failure, and research on host-microbe interactions at the eye’s mucosal surface.

(2021)This video demonstrates the use of size exclusion chromatography with porous resin beads to isolate bacterial extracellular vesicles (EVs) from a bacterial culture filtrate. Larger EVs elute early by bypassing the resin pores, while smaller proteins enter the pores and elute later.
