Ankle Dorsiflexion

Ankle dorsiflexion is the movement that brings the top of the foot toward the shin, increasing the angle between the foot and lower leg at the ankle joint. It occurs primarily at the talocrural joint as the tibia moves forward over the foot or the foot moves upward, while the calf muscles, especially the gastrocnemius and soleus, lengthen under controlled tension. Adequate dorsiflexion supports walking, running, stair climbing, squatting, and balance by allowing the body to advance over the planted foot. In medicine, clinicians assess this range of motion to identify joint stiffness, muscle tightness, contractures, and movement limitations after injury, then use targeted stretching, strengthening, and mobility exercises during rehabilitation.

Ankle Exam

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The ankle and foot provide the foundation for the body and the stability needed for upright posture and ambulation. Because of its weight-bearing function, the ankle joint is a common site of injury among athletes and in the general population. Ankle injuries occur as a result of both acute trauma and repetitive overuse (such as running). The ankle is a fairly simple joint, consisting of the articulation between the...

This protocol presents a testing system used to induce quantifiable and controlled fatigue injuries in a rat Achilles tendon for an in-vivo model of overuse-induced tendinopathy. The procedure consists of securing the rat's ankle to a joint actuator that performs passive ankle dorsiflexion with a custom-written MATLAB script.

Ankle Joint

The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Diagnosis of Musculus Gastrocnemius Tightness - Key Factors for the Clinical Examination

Isolated Musculus gastrocnemius tightness is a common cause for foot and ankle pathologies. Currently no standardized examination procedure exists. This manuscript demonstrates that 20 degree of knee flexion eliminates the restraining effect of the M. gastrocnemius on ankle dorsiflexion and presents a video description of a standardized examination protocol.
