Canal Occupation Ratio

Canal Occupation Ratio is a radiologic measurement that estimates how much of the spinal canal is occupied by displaced bone or other material, helping characterize canal compromise after spinal injury. On axial imaging, clinicians compare the cross-sectional area of retropulsed fragments with the available canal area and express the result as a percentage. In medicine, this metric supports assessment of thoracolumbar fractures, spinal stenosis, and potential neural-element compression. Interpreted alongside neurological findings and other imaging features, it can assist injury classification, treatment planning, and evaluation of whether surgical decompression or stabilization may be necessary.
