Ct Value Histogram

A Ct value histogram is a graphical summary of cycle threshold values from real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) tests, showing how measured nucleic acid signals are distributed across a patient group or sample set. During amplification, fluorescence is recorded as target DNA or cDNA increases, and the Ct value marks the cycle when fluorescence exceeds a defined threshold; lower Ct values generally indicate more starting template, while higher values indicate less. In medicine, these histograms help assess assay performance, identify shifts in test populations, compare specimen groups, and interpret patterns in infectious-disease diagnostics. Because Ct values depend on assay conditions, they support, but do not replace, clinical evaluation.

Probability Histograms

A probability histogram is a visual representation of a probability distribution. Similar a typical histogram, the probability histogram consists of contiguous (adjoining) boxes. It has both a horizontal axis and a vertical axis. The horizontal axis is labeled with what the data represents. The vertical axis is labeled with probability. Each rectangular bar in the histogram is 1 unit wide, which suggests that the area under each bar equals the probability, P(x), where x is 1, 2, 3, and so on.

The histogram is a graphical representation in the x-y form of data distribution in a data set. The horizontal x-axis is labeled with what the data represents (for instance, distance from your home to school). The vertical y-axis is labeled either frequency or relative frequency (or percent frequency or probability). A histogram graph consists of contiguous (adjoining) boxes. The heights of the bars correspond to frequency values. The graph will have the same shape with respective labels. The...

Relative Frequency Histogram

The relative frequency depicts the proportion of data points that have each value. The frequency tells the number of data points that have each value. Like the histogram, a relative frequency histogram also has the same shape with a horizontal scale (the x-axis), but the vertical scale (the y-axis) is marked with relative frequencies (percentages of the whole) instead of actual frequencies. A relative frequency histogram is a graphical representation of a frequency distribution where the...

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut It's a little-known fact that the discovery and (inadvertent) use of X-rays garnered the first ever Nobel Prize in Physics. The famous X-ray image of Dr. Röntgen's wife's hand from 1895 that sent shock waves through the scientific community looks like most modern day 2D medical X-ray images. Though it is not the newest technology, X-ray absorption...

TSPO-PET/CT Imaging to Detect Infarct Formation in a Mouse Model of Ischemic Stroke

Source: Chaney, A. M., et.al. PET Imaging of Neuroinflammation Using [11C]DPA-713 in a Mouse Model of Ischemic Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2018). This video demonstrates a technique for in vivo imaging of neuroinflammation in a mouse model of ischemic stroke using a TSPO-specific radiotracer. Following injection, the radiotracer binds to TSPO, a protein located on the outer mitochondrial membrane and overexpressed in activated immune cells. A PET/CT scanner detects the radiotracer's distribution and...
