Phosphene Threshold

Phosphene threshold is the minimum intensity of stimulation required to produce a perceived flash of light, called a phosphene, without corresponding external illumination. In neuroscience, researchers determine it by gradually increasing electrical, magnetic, or mechanical stimulation until activity in retinal or visual cortical neurons reaches a level that generates conscious visual perception; threshold values can vary with stimulus location, duration, waveform, and individual sensitivity. Measuring phosphene thresholds provides a noninvasive way to assess visual pathway excitability and cortical function. The method supports studies of sensory processing, transcranial magnetic stimulation, visual neuroprostheses, and changes in neural responsiveness caused by disease or treatment.

Phosphenes are transient percepts of light that can be induced by applying Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to visually sensitive regions of cortex. We demonstrate a standard protocol for determining the phosphene threshold value and introduce a novel method for quantifying and analyzing perceived phosphenes.

The Staircase Procedure for Finding a Perceptual Threshold

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is the name for a set of methods in perceptual psychology designed in order to relate the actual intensity of stimuli to their perceptual intensity. One important aspect of psychophysics involves the measurement of perceptual thresholds: How bright does a light need to be for a person to be able to detect it? How little pressure applied to the skin is detectable? How soft can a sound be and still be heard? Put...

Here, we describe a rapid reliable and simple procedure to determine the lowest temperature at which rats or mice show nocifensive behavior, i.e. the thermal nociceptive threshold (TNT). This method applies a slowly increasing thermal stimulus allowing precise and reproducible estimation of TNTs with minimum, if any, stress to the animals.
