Making Aldehydes and Ketones from Acids

Description

Carboxylic acids and nitriles can be turned into aldehydes and ketones by using the right reducing conditions. Strong reducers such as lithium aluminum hydride (LAH) are not ideal for making an aldehyde from a carboxylic acid, because the aldehyde forms and then quickly over-reduces to a primary alcohol.

Treating a carboxylic acid with lithium aluminum hydride yields an aldehyde, which instantly reduces to a primary alcohol.

This over-reduction occurs because LAH is a strong reductant and aldehydes are more easily reduced than acids.
