Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Description

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed.

When a stone is thrown on the surface of a calm lake, we see circular rings form and spread out from the drop point. These circular rings observed on the water surface are an example of wave motion.

Wave motion is a disturbance that propagates from a state of rest or equilibrium without bulk motion of matter.
