Dry friction is a force that opposes the relative motion between two solid surfaces in contact.
Consider a wooden crate resting on a rough, non-rigid horizontal surface that is being pulled horizontally to the right.
In equilibrium, the normal forces must act upward to balance the crate&#39;s weight, and the frictional forces act left to prevent the movement of the crate to the right.
The floor exerts an uneven distribution of normal and dry frictional force along the contact surface.
Close examination reveals microscopic irregularities at the interface, creating reactive forces at each contact point, contributing to frictional and normal force components.
Their resultants indicate their net effect, with the normal force acting at a distance y from the line of action of weight.
This position coincides with the centroid of the normal force distribution and balances the tipping effect caused by the applied force.
For example, if a force is applied at the height of h, then moment equilibrium about point O is satisfied only at a particular value of y.

Dry friction appears when two solid surfaces touch and try to move past each other. Students can see it when they walk, slide a box across a table, or rub their hands together. Even though it is common, the forces behind it are not easy to see.

A simple crate on a rough horizontal floor helps explain the idea. When an external force pushes the crate sideways, two main forces act on it. The normal force acts perpendicular to the surface and helps balance the crate’s weight, while the frictional force acts opposite the motion.

The floor does not push evenly along the whole contact area. Instead, normal and dry frictional forces are spread out unevenly where the crate touches the floor. Tiny surface irregularities at that interface create reactive forces at many contact points, and these forces add up to the overall normal and frictional effects.

The combined forces can be represented by resultants. The resultant normal force acts at a point that is some distance from the line of action of the crate’s weight. This point matches the centroid of the normal force distribution and helps offset the tipping effect caused by the applied force.
