Consider a single-phase two-wire transmission line with equal phase spacing energized by a voltage source. One conductor carries a uniform charge, and its counterpart has an equal negative charge. Applying the formula for voltage between conductors and substituting cylinder radii, the capacitance for a one-meter line is calculated.
For lines supplied by a grounded center tap transformer, the voltage between each conductor and ground and the capacitance from either line to the grounded neutral are obtained.
These capacitances are represented in specific circuit representations.
Next, consider a three-phase line with equal phase spacing, neglecting earth and neutral conductor effects.
To determine the positive-sequence capacitance, the sum of positive-sequence charges is assumed to be zero.
Now, the voltage between the conductors is calculated, followed by substituting the radii.
Recalling the voltage equations for balanced positive-sequence voltages, adding them, substituting the voltage expressions, and the charge relation gives the capacitance-to-neutral per line length.
The same results apply for all three phases due to symmetry, but for a balanced three-phase operation, only one phase is considered.

Where &#1013; is the permittivity of free space, D is the distance between the conductors, and r is the radius of the conductors. When the line is energized by a grounded center tap transformer, the voltage between each conductor and the ground, as well as the capacitance from either line to the grounded neutral, can be determined. This capacitance is represented in circuit models to accurately reflect the behavior of the transmission line under different operating conditions.
Three-Phase Lines
The analysis becomes more complex in three-phase transmission lines with equal phase spacing due to the interaction among the phases. For balanced positive-sequence voltages, the sum of the positive-sequence charges is assumed to be zero. The voltage between any two conductors is given by:

where Dab, Dba, Dbc, Dac are the distances between the conductors, and qa, qb and qc are the charges on the respective conductors. The capacitance to neutral per unit length is given by:

where D is the equivalent distance between the conductors, calculated using the geometric mean distance. Due to the symmetrical nature of balanced three-phase lines, this capacitance is the same for each phase.

Transmission line capacitance affects how power lines store charge and behave in electrical power systems. It is an important part of line modeling because it helps describe efficient operation. For a single-phase line, the key idea is the charge on the conductors and the voltage between them.

A single-phase transmission line uses two wires with equal spacing. One conductor carries a uniform positive charge, and the other carries an equal negative charge. From the voltage between the conductors, the capacitance of a one-meter section can be found using the conductor spacing, the conductor radius, and the permittivity of free space.

When a single-phase line is energized by a grounded center tap transformer, the voltage to ground also matters. In that case, the voltage between each conductor and the ground can be determined. The capacitance from either line to the grounded neutral can also be found and included in circuit models.

Three-phase transmission lines are more complex because the phases interact with one another. For balanced positive-sequence voltages, the sum of the positive-sequence charges is assumed to be zero. The voltage between any two conductors depends on the charges on phases a, b, and c, as well as the distances between them.

For a balanced three-phase line with equal spacing, the capacitance to neutral is given per unit length. The equivalent distance between conductors is calculated using the geometric mean distance. Because the line is symmetrical, this capacitance is the same for each phase. This helps engineers model transmission lines correctly and study reliable power-system operation.
