Uniform depth channel flow keeps the water depth steady along an open channel. This idea is often used for irrigation canals and is also a useful approximation for rivers. The channel bottom slope must match the energy slope. That balance offsets the gravity energy lost to shear stress at the boundary, so the depth does not change along the channel length.

In a constant cross-section channel, uniform flow means the depth and velocity stay consistent. Two key measures are the flow area and the wetted perimeter, which is the part of the channel boundary in contact with the fluid. The water moves fastest below the surface and slows to zero at the boundary because of wall shear stress. Even though the velocity profile changes across the depth, a simplified profile with steady shear stress is often accurate enough for practical work, much like using friction factors in pipe flow analysis.

For steady, uniform depth flow, fluid acceleration is zero. Most open-channel flows are turbulent, with Reynolds numbers well above the transitional range. In high Reynolds number pipe flow, the friction factor f depends only on relative roughness, ε/D, where ε is surface roughness and D is pipe diameter. In that fully turbulent case, wall shear stress is proportional to dynamic pressure and does not depend on viscosity, so flow resistance is driven mainly by roughness instead of fluid properties.

The Chezy and Manning equations are the main tools for calculating uniform flow in open channels. The Chezy equation links velocity to hydraulic radius, slope, and an empirical Chezy coefficient.
