Latitudes and departures are key parts of surveying that help break a traverse line into north-south and east-west parts. These projections let surveyors work with line direction, length, bearings, and area in a clear way. They are also useful for measuring and mapping land accurately.

Latitude is the north-south projection of a line. It is found by multiplying the line length by the cosine of its bearing. Departure is the east-west projection. It is found by multiplying the line length by the sine of its bearing. These values are like Cartesian x and y coordinates, but they describe changes between points rather than fixed positions.

For a closed traverse, the algebraic sum of all latitudes and the algebraic sum of all departures should equal zero. If they do not, the traverse does not close and measurement error is present. These errors usually come from mistakes in angle or distance measurements. Surveyors correct them with balancing methods such as the compass rule.

The compass rule distributes the error across the traverse sides in proportion to their lengths. This adjustment gives balanced latitudes and departures and restores geometric closure.
