A chemical compound is a substance made up of two or more different elements that are chemically bonded together. When elements combine to form compounds, their atoms rearrange, resulting in new physical and chemical properties distinct from those of the individual elements.

A compound is a unique substance formed when two or more elements combine chemically.

Unlike mixtures, compounds always have fixed ratios of elements and unique properties. For instance, in water, H₂O, there are two hydrogen atoms for every oxygen atom.
