Site-specific conditions, including oxygen gradients, pH levels, and nutrient availability, determine the spatial distribution of these microorganisms within the oral cavity. The oral microbiome is dynamic and can shift toward dysbiosis due to external influences such as antibiotic use, illness, or changes in hygiene.Microbial Niches in the Oral Cavity Different regions of the mouth offer distinct ecological niches that favor the growth of specific microbes. The surface of the tongue, characterized by papillary structures and reduced oxygen levels, supports a dense and diverse microbial community. This includes facultative and obligate anaerobes, which thrive in the microaerophilic and anaerobic microenvironments formed within the tongue's grooves.The gingival sulcus, located at the gum line, is another low-oxygen habitat that favors anaerobic species such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum. These bacteria are implicated in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases due to their pro-inflammatory and tissue-destructive activities. In contrast, the hard, non-shedding surfaces of the teeth facilitate the formation of biofilms. Here, early colonizers such as Streptococcus spp. adhere to the enamel and contribute to the development of dental plaque. Other representative genera in the oral cavity include Actinomyces and Veillonella, which also play significant roles in oral microbial ecology.Role of Saliva and Colonization Resistance Saliva plays a dual role in maintaining oral health by serving as a nutrient source and a transport medium for microbial dispersal. It also contains antimicrobial compounds such as lysozyme, lactoferrin, and immunoglobulins.The established oral microbiota provides colonization resistance against pathogenic species by occupying ecological niches and outcompeting invaders for nutrients and adhesion sites. This protective mechanism is crucial for the prevention of oral diseases, such as dental caries and gingivitis, which are often associated with microbial dysbiosis. The host immune system also interacts with the oral microbiota to maintain microbial balance and prevent the overgrowth of harmful species. In addition to preventing disease, oral microbes also support early digestion, immune signaling, and nitrate metabolism, contributing to both oral and systemic health.

The oral microbiome is a complex community of bacteria and other microbes that live in the mouth. More than 700 microbial species have been identified so far through genomic sequencing and culture-based studies. Some microbes form a core microbiome that is found in most people, while others vary with diet, lifestyle, and host genetics.

Different parts of the mouth create different habitats for these microbes. The tongue surface has papillae, or small bumps, that trap food and lower oxygen levels. These conditions support a dense mix of facultative anaerobes and obligate anaerobes, which can live in low-oxygen or no-oxygen settings. The gingival sulcus, the groove at the gum line, is also low in oxygen and can support anaerobic species such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Teeth provide another important surface for microbial growth. Their hard, non-shedding enamel lets bacteria attach and form biofilms, which are layered microbial communities. Early colonizers such as Streptococcus species stick to the enamel first and help build dental plaque. Other common genera in the mouth include Actinomyces and Veillonella, which also contribute to oral microbial ecology.

The oral microbiome changes when site conditions change. Oxygen levels, pH, and nutrient availability help determine where microbes live in the mouth. It can also shift toward dysbiosis, which means an imbalance in the normal community, after antibiotic use, illness, or changes in hygiene. This imbalance can affect oral health and help harmful microbes grow.

Saliva helps shape this ecosystem in two ways. It carries microbes and nutrients through the mouth, and it also contains antimicrobial compounds such as lysozyme, lactoferrin, and immunoglobulins, which are immune proteins. The established oral microbiota also provides colonization resistance by filling niches and competing with new microbes for nutrients and attachment sites. This protection helps reduce the risk of dental caries and gingivitis, while oral microbes also support early digestion, immune signaling, nitrate metabolism, and overall systemic health.
