Question 1

What is cost-benefit analysis in psychological research ethics?

Accepted Answer

Cost-benefit analysis is a decision process that weighs the study's research benefits against potential risks or harms to participants. Researchers must ensure the study's intent and value outweigh any costs or risks involved. This ethical framework helps determine whether a study should proceed and guides decisions about how to design sensitive research responsibly.

Question 2

Why do researchers use benign behaviors instead of actual aggression in studies?

Accepted Answer

Researchers use benign behaviors to study aggression ethically without exposing participants to serious harm or violence. For example, instead of physical aggression, researchers might measure beverage choices or verbal responses. This approach allows scientists to understand aggressive behavior while maintaining participant safety and meeting ethical standards.

Question 3

How does informed consent protect participants in psychology experiments?

Accepted Answer

Informed consent requires researchers to guide participants through the study's overall plan before beginning. Participants receive consent papers explaining what they'll experience, allowing them to make voluntary decisions about participation. This process ensures participants understand potential risks and can withdraw, establishing a foundation for ethical research conduct.

Question 4

What role does debriefing play after a psychology study ends?

Accepted Answer

Debriefing occurs at the study's conclusion and explains why deception was necessary and what actually happened during the experiment. This process helps participants understand the research goals and addresses any concerns or negative feelings from the study. Debriefing is essential for ethical compliance and helps restore participant trust after sensitive research.

Question 5

How can researchers measure stress responses without causing physical harm?

Accepted Answer

Researchers obtain physiological measures such as skin conductance, heart rate, and stress hormone levels non-invasively through simple monitoring equipment and saliva samples. These methods provide reliable data on stress responses without painful physical stressors like treadmill running or cold exposure. This ethical approach allows study of stress while protecting participant wellbeing.

Question 6

What design strategies do animal researchers use to minimize ethical concerns?

Accepted Answer

Animal researchers employ within-group designs to reduce unnecessary subjects, use behavioral tasks to obtain natural responses, and administer pharmaceutical agents to minimize pain and suffering. These strategies balance research goals with animal welfare. Such ethical considerations ensure that animal research generates valuable data while respecting the wellbeing of research subjects.

Question 7

How does a two-group design help study cause-effect relationships in aggression research?

Accepted Answer

A two-group design compares participants who receive different treatments to establish cause-effect relationships. In aggression studies, one group receives negative feedback while another receives neutral feedback, allowing researchers to measure whether negative feedback causes aggressive retaliation. This design structure isolates the independent variable and demonstrates the cause-effect relationship psychology experiments require.
