Receptor-mediated endocytosis is a specialized type of pinocytosis that allows cells to take in specific molecules by binding them to receptors on the cell surface.
One example of this process is the uptake of low-density lipoprotein particles, or LDL particles.
The process begins when an LDL particle binds to an LDL receptor through its surface protein, called apolipoprotein B-100.
On the inner side of the membrane, adaptor proteins bind to the receptor tails, causing the membrane to curve inward.
These adaptor proteins then recruit clathrin, which assembles into three-legged structures called triskelions.
As more clathrin is added, it forms a clathrin-coated pit, with the LDL particles enclosed inside.
Additional proteins, such as dynamin, gather around the neck of the pit and pinch off the clathrin-coated vesicle.
The clathrin coating is rapidly released, and the uncoated vesicle then fuses with endosomes.
In this acidic endosome, the LDL receptors detach from LDL and move into recycling vesicles that return them to the cell surface, where they can bind new LDL particles.
Inside the cell, the LDL particles are then sent to lysosomes, where enzymes break them down into cholesterol, fatty acids, and small protein fragments that the cell can use.
