Atomic nuclei, being positively charged, behave like rotating charges when they have a nonzero spin.
The nucleus generates a magnetic field, B, due to its spin and charge. So, it has a magnetic moment, μ, which is randomly oriented in the absence of an external magnetic field.
When an external magnetic field, B0, is applied, the magnetic moment vectors can align with or against the field in 2I + 1 orientations.
A hydrogen nucleus, or a proton, has an I value of ½ and two possible orientations.
The orientation aligned with the field, called spin +½, spin-up, or α, has a lower energy than the spin −½, spin-down, or β orientation aligned against the field.
