Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.
All matter is made of fundamental substances called elements. Each element is composed of unique atoms that retain all the properties of that element.
Matter can exist as solid, such as bones and teeth; liquid, such as blood and urine; or gas, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Matter exhibits physical and chemical properties. Physical properties of matter are the characteristics that can be observed and measured without changing their identity and composition, such as mass, color, volume, density, taste, or appearance.
Some physical properties, such as melting point and freezing point, can be measured when the matter changes from one physical state to another.
Chemical properties, such as flammability, acidity, or toxicity, are measured only when there is a change in the chemical composition of a substance.
Knowing the properties of a substance can help a person classify, identify, or purify specific types of matter.
