Simple epithelium is a monolayer of cells covering the basement membrane. Such a thin barrier facilitates the rapid absorption and secretion of selective substances. Simple epithelia can be squamous, cuboidal, or columnar.
The simple squamous epithelium consists of flattened cells forming a smooth epithelial barrier that minimizes friction while allowing the exchange of gases and nutrients. Their two forms are endothelium and mesothelium.
Endothelium lines blood and lymph vessels facilitating the easy flow of fluids.
Mesothelium forms a slippery film to line internal body cavities or to cover the lungs, heart, and abdominal organs externally. It protects internal organs from rubbing against each other during breathing, pumping blood, or churning food during digestion.
The simple cuboidal epithelium contains cells of the same height and width. They line the kidney tubules, facilitating waste secretion and nutrient reabsorption.
The simple columnar epithelium is a layer of tightly packed tall cells. In the intestines, the columnar lining has finger-like membrane protrusions or microvilli to enhance nutrient absorption, whereas the stomach lining forms tubular glands that secrete digestive juices.
