A burn is damage to the skin or deeper tissues caused by extreme heat, radiation, electric shock, or a chemical agent.
The depth and surface area of the burn site contribute to its severity. Depending on the burn severity, the damage can lead to cell death, fluid loss, renal failure, circulatory shock, and even death.
A first-degree burn affects only the epidermis with pain and localized redness that heals quickly. Mild sunburns are classified as first-degree burns.
Second-degree burns damage the epidermis and parts of the dermis. The affected area turns red with blisters and swelling, which usually heals within one to two weeks, with little or no scarring. Boiling water can cause a second-degree burn.
Third-degree burns are more severe, damaging the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis and injuring the sensory nerves. The wound site appears white to reddish in color and dry. As these burns affect the skin across all the layers, skin grafting is often performed to treat the wound. Direct exposure to flames can cause third-degree burns.
