Adrenergic receptors, or adrenoceptors, respond to catecholamine agonists like NA, Adr, and ISO.
All adrenoceptors are G protein–coupled receptors with seven transmembrane helices.
Catecholamine binding induces a conformational change in the receptors. This allows G protein activation, which modifies the production of second messengers.
Adrenoceptors are classified as α- and β-adrenoceptors based on their sensitivity to various catecholamine agonists.
The α-adrenoceptors are weakly responsive to ISO compared to Adr, and NA. α-Adrenoceptors are further classified into α1 and α2 subtypes.
The ꞵ-adrenoceptors demonstrate higher sensitivity to ISO than Adr and NA. ꞵ-adrenoceptors are subdivided into ꞵ1, ꞵ2 , and ꞵ3 subtypes.
Effector organs innervated by adrenergic neurons typically have a predominant adrenoceptor subtype. For instance, though skeletal muscle vasculature has both α1- and ꞵ2-adrenoceptors, the ꞵ2 subtype predominates.
