The precipitate should be of low solubility, high purity, known composition, and easily separable from the reaction mixture.
For example, in the estimation of nickel, the precipitant is ethanolic dimethylglyoxime, which yields a red precipitate of nickel bis(dimethylglyoximate).
The reaction pH is manipulated to ensure complete precipitation.
Then, the precipitate is digested to increase particle size, followed by filtration using a pre-weighed filtering funnel.
This precipitate is washed with cold water, dried in an oven, and allowed to cool in a desiccator.
Next, the mass of the precipitate is obtained, following which stoichiometric relationships are applied to calculate the nickel content.
