The stability of metal complexes depends on the nature of the central metal ion and the attached ligands.
So, small ions with a high positive charge on the metal attract many ligands strongly to form stable complexes.
Metal ions are classified as class A and class B metals.
Class A metals like alkali, alkaline earth and metals of the first transition series form stable complexes with ligands that have nitrogen, oxygen, or fluorine as donor atoms over others.
Whereas class B, like metals from the second and third transition series, form stable complexes with ligands that have sulfur, or chlorine as donor atoms.
Bulky ligands weaken the metal–ligand bond due to steric hindrance and destabilize the complex.
Alternatively, chelating ligands form five or six-membered rings with the metal center, forming more stable complexes.
Further, cyclic ligands with three or more donor sites form highly stable complexes due to the macrocyclic effect.
